Sofia Mendel
Hello! I’m Sofia Mendel, the voice behind CaneCrafters. With a vibrant heritage that blends my Jewish and Hispanic ancestors’ rich cultures, I’ve always been at the crossroads of diverse traditions, languages, and crafts. My journey into the world of cane crafting began as a child, watching my abuela intricately weave beautiful patterns from simple reeds while my grandmother shared stories of Eastern European craftsmanship.
I pursued a path that allowed me to explore the depths of history, art, and science, eventually earning a degree in Material Science focusing on sustainable materials. This intellectual pursuit deepened my appreciation for traditional crafts and their place in our modern world, driving me to explore how ancient techniques can be revitalized and preserved through contemporary design.
Hi, I’m Sofia
CaneCrafters is more than just a blog; it’s a portal to the weaving world, where tradition meets innovation. Here, I share my experiments with cane, rattan, and other natural materials, blending them with modern aesthetics to create pieces that tell a story. My work and writings aim to inspire, educate, and connect people to the tactile joy of handcrafted art.
